"Something About Your Love" is the debut music video for soul-pop artist ColinResponse that takes you back to the good ol' days in the '90s. The song is really about ColinResponse's first love: music. To come up with an original concept that was authentic to the artist, I interviewed ColinResponse about his craft and his childhood. From there, I wrote a script outline that encapsulates an anecdote from his childhood, as well as a duality of past-and-present; although time has gone by, music still remains ColinResponse's first love.
As the director, I wanted the music video to reflect the sound of the song–a strong hit of nostalgia with a modern feel. I also wanted to make sure that in our approach we retained authenticity for the artist, especially in the production details. For example, we set and shot the video at the exact elementary school that ColinResponse attended and some of the accessories young ColinResponse wears in the video is actually from the artist's childhood.
It was a great challenge to find the child lead to play young ColinResponse, so many factors go into this consideration and again, the artist and I wanted it to feel natural and not forced. Not to mention, ColinResponse has such tremendous zeal when he is performing, we wanted to make sure his child-self could capture hearts in the same way. After several casting sessions, a (new) friend tipped us of on our young lead. Seeing this kid's photos and the vibrations had I knew he was the one. His audition proved it to be so, as well. He was a first-time actor with a lot of charisma. It's sufficient to say he floored everyone during our shoot. We spent a bit of time prior to the shoot teaching the young actor the way ColinResponse performs, his mannerisms, and choreography.
Actress Katherine Barrell (Workin' Moms, Wynnona Earp) and actors Lamar Johnson (The Next Step, X-Men: Dark Pheonix) and Matt Murray (9JKL, Rookie Blue) had fun cameos in the video and were such pros to film with.
Halfway through the day we were met with an unexpected rainstorm, causing me to rework the approach and the shoot schedule on the spot. The crew and talent were extremely supportive in making it all happen. I was utterly humbled by everyone's dedication and support.
The video premiered on PopMatters.com and is currently playing at a bar near you.
